South Beach Jazz Honors & Awards Brunch

Power Access is proud to present the annual South Beach Jazz Honors & Awards Brunch on May 18 from 11AM – 2PM, recognizing outstanding local students with disabilities for excellence in music and the arts. This inspiring event is part of the South Beach Jazz Festival and celebrates the next generation of artists and changemakers.

Enjoy a live performance by the Nicole Yarling 4-Tet, special guest appearances, and a showcase of talent from our scholarship recipients. A buffet brunch will be provided by YUCA 105—Miami Beach’s first Cuban-Peruvian fusion restaurant.

Tickets are $125. A portion of each ticket supports Power Access scholarships and inclusive youth programming in the arts.

Christopher Bedrossian – Excellence in Music
Nominated by Miami Lighthouse for the Blind and Visually Impaired
Christopher Bedrossian is an outstanding blind student who has demonstrated exceptional talent and commitment in developing his skills on the electric guitar. Despite the challenges associated with visual impairment, Christopher has shown unwavering dedication and passion for music. His growth as a guitarist has been nothing short of remarkable. With every performance—both within the Miami Lighthouse for the Blind and at external venues—he captivates audiences and showcases not only his technical abilities but also a deep emotional connection to his instrument. Christopher is consistently involved in institutional activities and events, always ready to contribute his talents to support the mission of Miami Lighthouse. His collaborative spirit, positive attitude, and professional demeanor make him a valuable participant in every initiative he joins. His nominator writes, “I have no doubt that Christopher Bedrossian is on his way to becoming one of the finest guitarists in the city of Miami.” His mother shares that “his resilience and passion serve as a powerful reminder that limitations do not define one’s potential. In addition to his musical accomplishments, Christopher is an advocate for inclusivity in the arts. His journey is a message that perseverance and a love for music can lead to success.”

Nakia Hawkins – Excellence in the Arts
Nominated by The Arsht Center and Barbara Goleman Senior High School
At just 10 years old, Nakia Hawkins was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes, a challenge she has never allowed to limit her growth. Nakia has served as a Student Ambassador at the Adrienne Arsht Center, Historian for the Safe Club, and a dedicated member of the National Honor Society and Drama Club. She has attended summer academic programs at Johns Hopkins University, the University of Florida, and American University. An ambitious student pursuing a future in science while staying deeply involved in the arts, Nakia has explored dance, theater, set design, creative writing, and photography. She notes, “I have spent years exploring various art forms, including performing arts such as ballet, tap, and jazz. I also participated in theater at my high school, focusing on tech roles, designing and painting sets. Additionally, I have expressed myself through creative writing in poetry and fictional stories and experimenting with photography.” Her science instructor, Luis Mendez, writes, “What sets Nakia apart from my other students is her desire to better herself. She participates in leadership institutes and STEM programs during the summer while maintaining a 3.7 GPA. Nakia is simply an outstanding student and person.”

Mark Nunez – Excellence in the Arts
Nominated by Area Stage
Mark Nunez is a 14-year-old actor with autism whose presence on stage and commitment to his craft have made a lasting impact at Area Stage’s Inspire Theater Project. Since joining in 2023, Mark has taken on leading roles including Dimitry in Anastasia, Rooster Hannigan in Annie, and Horton the Elephant in Seussical. His passion for performing is matched by a remarkable level of discipline and responsibility. His nominator writes, “What sets Mark apart is not only his talent but also his unwavering dedication for every role, his full commitment to rehearsals, and his participation in outreach events. Despite his young age, his exceptional sense of responsibility and unwavering dedication have distinguished him and significantly contributed to the success of every project he has been part of.” Through his performances, Mark challenges stereotypes and showcases the immense potential of neurodiverse individuals in the arts. His mother adds, “Mark has consistently demonstrated maturity, discipline, and an unwavering commitment to his craft. He approaches each opportunity with enthusiasm and professionalism, earning the respect of his peers and instructors.”

Daniel Brown – Excellence in Music
Nominated by Goodwill Industries of South Florida
Daniel Brown is a passionate vocalist and dancer who has been a steady and enthusiastic member of the Spirit of Goodwill Band since 2008. Born and raised in Miami, Daniel’s love for music and dance began before he could talk. He was once part of the Hip Hop Kids and later found his musical home with Goodwill after being inspired by one of the band’s performances. His nominator shares, “After hearing Daniel’s phenomenal voice, he was offered a position in the band without hesitation. His exceptional talent and vibrant personality perfectly complement the band’s energy.” Over the years, Daniel has built lasting friendships, contributed to team performances, and inspired audiences across South Florida. His parents write, “Daniel, you’re a young man now, and as we have observed your actions with admiration, we wish to honor you. You are a loving, caring, and forgiving person. Thanks to Goodwill, you have accomplished your dreams performing with the band.”
