Power Access Inc. a non-profit organization dedicated to raising awareness for people with disabilities is proud to announce the Third Annual South Beach Jazz Festival, January 4 – 6, 2019. The festival which attracts audiences worldwide to trendy South Beach, FL, will feature an extraordinary three-day line-up of award winning jazz artists performing in three ticketed and seven free performances. Production for the festival is Miami based KCC Productions.
In its short three-year history, The South Beach Jazz Festival has become a recognized national event whose mission is to expand awareness and strengthen Miami’s reputation for cultural innovation and inclusion of persons with disabilities.
In commenting David New, founder and president of Power Access, Inc. stated: “The main objective of the South Beach Jazz Festival is to raise public awareness of persons with disabilities. We are proud to present not only the finest talent in jazz, but in keeping with our mission, each musical performance will showcase the artistry of at least one person with a disability, promoting the festival’s primary goal, enabling them to be defined by ability rather than disability.”
Headlining the festival’s three ticketed events beginning Friday evening January 4, 2019 is the legendary multi-GRAMMY and Tony award winning vocalist Dee Dee Bridgewater. World-renowned pianist/composer Marcus Roberts (recipient of the Helen Keller Personal Achievement Award) will perform with his trio Saturday evening January 5 and the Alex Weitz Jazz Quartet will headline a jazz brunch on Sunday, January 6th. Leading the incredible line-up of free events is Miami’s own musical icon flutist Nestor Torres, who will conduct an “all ages” master class on Saturday, Dec. 5th and will also make a special guest appearance with Maria Rivas during her performance Sunday, January 6. Befittingly, The festival’s ticketed events will be held at iconic theaters and venues throughout Miami Beach including the Colony Theatre and the Miami Beach Community Church. Free performances will take place on stages at Euclid Circle and 1111 Lincoln Road. Prices for ticketed events range from $40 – $65. Considered one of the pioneering masters of Jazz Flute, Latin Grammy Award winner Nestor Torres’ rhythmic and mellifluous flute sound remains in a class all by itself. His 14 recordings as a soloist have received a Latin Grammy, 4 Latin Grammy nominations, one Grammy nomination and one Latin Grammy Award. In addition to his diverse and sold out performances worldwide his collaborations include such artists as Gloria Estefan, Kenny Loggins, Dave Mathews, Herbie Hancock, Tito Puente, Michael Camilo, Paquito D’ Rivera and Arturo Sandoval; as well as performances with the Cleveland, Singapore, and New World Symphony Orchestras among many others.

Pianist/composer, Marcus Roberts, has been hailed “the genius of the modern piano”. In 2014, the celebrated CBS News television show, 60 Minutes, profiled his life and work on a segment entitled “The Virtuoso,” tracing his life to date from his early roots in Jacksonville. Roberts has won numerous awards and competitions over the years, but the one that is most personally meaningful to him is the Helen Keller Award for Personal Achievement. While Roberts is known for his remarkable ability to blend the jazz and classical idioms to create something wholly new, he may be even better known for his development of an entirely new approach to jazz trio performance at the Florida School for the Deaf and Blind to his remarkable career as a modern jazz musician.

New York saxophonist Alex Weitz has an in-depth knowledge of composition that imbues his originals with robust, memorable melodies and structural integrity. The classical rigor of those melodies is just as evident in the way he improvises around them. Since graduating from Miami’s Frost School of Music, Alex’s primary musical focus has been on performing, composing, and producing music with his ensemble, the Alex Weitz Group. March of 2013 saw their debut release “Chroma,” and after a long-awaited return his sophomore record, “Luma.” Weitz has appeared at such topflight venues as the Kennedy Center, the Monterey Jazz Festival, the Adrienne Arsht Center, the Tucson Jazz Festival, Gusman Hall, the Azamara Journey, and the Telluride Jazz Festival, among many others.

As a part of Miami’s vibrant music scene, singer/songwriter Leesa Richards is helping to shape and define its evolving sound. She has performed with a slate of powerhouse artists including Faith Hill, The Bee Gees, Kelly Clarkson, Gloria Estefan, and Carole King, and recorded with Barbra Streisand and Lenny Kravitz, among other artists. Richards grew up in music-rich Detroit and started showing an inclination towards the arts at a very early age. She began honing her vocal chops with soul greats Gerald Austin and Peabo Bryson and contemporary soul maverick Dionne Farris.

A vital force and emergent legend within both the hardcore straight ahead and Latin Jazz communities, Grammy© Award Winner Brian Lynch is as comfortable negotiating the complexities of clave with Afro-Caribbean pioneer Eddie Palmieri as he is swinging through advanced harmony with bebop maestro Phil Woods. A honored graduate of two of the jazz world’s most distinguished academies, Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers and the Horace Silver Quintet, he has been a valued collaborator with jazz artists such as Benny Golson, Toshiko Akiyoshi, and Charles McPherson; Latin music icons as diverse as Hector LaVoe and Lila Downs; and pop luminaries such as Prince. He currently is Professor of Jazz Trumpet at the Frost School of Music, University of Miami.

Jonathan Joseph has had a remarkable career, working with some of the greatest musical minds of the modern era. Jonathan has played with many of the world’s greats. Drumming for widely acclaimed artists such as Alexander O’Neal, Al Jarreau, Mike Stern, Bill Evans, David Sanborn, Pat Metheny, Randy Brecker, Ricky Martin during the “viní la vida loca” Tour and of course Miama’s very own Joss Stone during the Soul Sessions Tour.
Two-time Grammy Award nominee Robert “Bobby” Thomas Jr. has wowed audiences around the globe for more than three decades. Widely considered one of the most important percussionists in music history, his lightning-fast hands and percussive pyrotechnics prompted the great Joe Zawinul to bestow upon him the title of “Hand Drummer.” He played with saxophonist Jet Nero at the Gold Dust lounge and other artists including Ira Sullivan, Billy Marcus, Zoot Sims, Thad Jones, Monty Alexander and Mel Lewis. He has recorded and toured with the likes of Stan Getz, Ahmad Jamal, Monty Alexander, Sir Roland Hanna, Zoot Sims, Herbie Mann, Eddie Harris, Branford Marsalis, Ahmad Jamal, Junior Mance, Paul Desmond, Johnny James, Monty Alexander, Wes Montgomery, and Roberto Perera.
