“All About the Hammond B3 in Jazz: a Tribute to Dr. Lonnie Smith” – A Masterclass presented by Derek Fairholm
Organist Derek Fairholm will be exploring the Hammond B3’s unique and important role in Jazz and the artists who pioneered its path through the music. Highlighting the great Dr. Lonnie Smith, Derek will likewise explore the contributions and recordings of artists such as Jimmy Smith, Larry Young, Jack McDuff and many more while discussing the history and workings of the instrument itself. Catchy, funky, and swinging original guitar-and-organ-based tunes and arrangements stemming from the pen of guitarist and composer Russ Spiegel.
The music stands out via Russ’s strong, individual voice and is supported by top-notch Miami-based musicians Jim Gasior on Hammond organ, Manny Echazabal on saxophone, and Lucas Apostoleris on drums. Performance, song writing and sound engineering with enhanced self-efficacy and positive peer relations for all levels of ability. These young musicians perform in a variety of genres such as rock, pop, hip-hop, and jazz bringing a young and vibrant energy to each one.
