The Stamps Jazz Quintet is a unique ensemble at the Frost School of Music. Through the generosity of the Stamps Scholars Program, five exceptional young artists of the highest caliber are selected every four years for this group. Together, these students form a working jazz quintet for the length of their tenure at the Frost School of Music. Mentored by Dr. Chuck Bergeron and other Studio Music and Jazz faculty, the Stamps Jazz Quintet has performed both nationally and internationally. They have represented Frost at conferences and festivals across America. Additionally, the Stamps Jazz Quintets have recorded and produced albums of original music that are commercially available.
Led by vocalist, Kaleen Barton, whose focus is on expressing emotion through music. Her goal is for jazz appreciators to leave thinking about or feeling something different than when they sat down, whether through lyric delivery, scatting, or stage presence. Therefore, the quintet focuses on maintaining the emotional intention from the first note to the last note by stringing together all separate parts of the song to paint one coherent picture. The University of Miami Jazz Quintet deeply cares about jazz and maintaining it’s integrity through the depth of the music, the knowledge of the history behind the music, the high level of playing, and the high level of listening that is required as a player and an audience member. The quintet’s music is geared towards and enjoyed by those who love and know jazz and all that it encompasses including bebop, improvisation, latin music, cool jazz, and swing.
