After twenty years as a New York-based sideman, recording and touring with artists such as Miles Davis, Sonny Rollins, David Bowie, Mariah Carey, Brecker Brothers, Michel Camillo and countless others he moved to South Florida where he put together a band of the best players in town. After five albums, two Grammy nominations and tours throughout the United States and Europe Sammy never looked back.
In recent years Sammy has continued to record and play with other artists including Sonny Rollins, the late great Joey DeFrancesco, Gonzalo Rubalcaba, John DaVersa and others. Most recently, thanks to a Creative Residency grant from SouthArts, Sammy completed an album dedicated to the music of his father, the 1950’s boleros singer Charlie Figueroa featuring Gonzalo Rubalcaba, Aymée Nuviola, Miguel Zenon and others.
Sammy is also a beloved radio personality, combining his obsession with all kinds of music with in-depth interviews on The Sammy Figueroa Show (Monday mornings on Miami’s WDNA 88.9 FM) and his groundbreaking show ‘Social Music with Sammy Figueroa’, originally broadcast on New York City’s WBAI and currently online on Mixcloud.
