Melton Mustafa Jr. Biography:

Melton Mustafa Jr. is a dynamic trumpeter, educator, and producer from Atlanta, now based in Miami. Coming from a musical family, he is the son of renowned jazz trumpeter Melton Mustafa Sr. and has been inspired by his father’s legacy and the talents of his uncle, saxophonist Jesse Jones Jr. Melton’s journey began in high school, where he studied under Mr. Frank Neal at Miami Carol City High School. He went on to earn a Bachelor of Science in Music Education from Florida A&M University, where he served as section leader of the saxophone section in the legendary Marching “100.” He later obtained a Master’s Degree in Education from Florida International University. As an educator, Melton has taught music to children and young adults for years, currently serving at Pioneer Middle School and as a professor at Florida Memorial University. He was a quarterfinalist for the Grammy Music Educator Award and has developed exceptional music programs recognized throughout Miami-Dade and Broward counties. Melton’s performance career is equally impressive. He has played alongside artists such as Lalah Hathaway, Wycliffe Gordon, and has opened for Kelly Rowland. He has toured internationally, performing with the Ray Charles Band and at festivals like Jazz in the Gardens. Notably, he has conducted the “Star Spangled Banner” for the Junior Olympics and directed various musical productions, including the Super Bowl show “Global Rhythms Local Beat.” As a producer, Melton has released several albums, including “Scenes from Miami” and “The Traveling Man.” He is also the founder of the Miami Dade Parks Community Band and the Executive Producer of the Melton Mustafa Jazz Festival, which he has helped grow into a staple event in the community. Beyond music, Melton is passionate about community engagement and has received numerous accolades for his contributions, including recognition from the National Association of Negro Musicians and being named one of South Florida’s Most Outstanding Educators. Melton Mustafa Jr. continues to inspire through his dedication to music and education, creating a lasting impact in both fields.
